Woodmancote Primary Schools Gigantic MUGA Transformation

A Space for Athletes to Excel at Woodmancote School

We were delighted to work with Woodmancote School in Cheltenham to create a huge Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) to encourage active play and daily exercise.
Experienced Playground Consultant Nicole Fairman knew exactly how to create the perfect sporting space that could be used all year round.

Woodmancote School has beautiful, extensive grounds yet they had an area of rubber surfacing and dated trim trail equipment that was no longer suitable for use. Another issue involved parts of the school playing field that became waterlogged very quickly which meant outdoor sporting provision was limited in certain seasons.

A MUGA where Sporting Success Begins

Woodmancote is the proud owners of a fantastic MUGA measuring 24m x12m, which comfortably caters for full-class use. Learners now have a designated space where they can participate in daily high-intensity activities. The pitch is used by different pupils throughout breaks and lunchtimes and is also regularly accessed throughout curriculum time and for physical education.

The surfacing used in the MUGA is our matchwinner sports carpet which is bright, attractive and hardwearing. The non-directional pile and dense woven fibres allows for easy transfer of the ball when passing as well as providing good rebound. The surfacing is free-draining which means a muddy, water-logged pitch will never again pose a problem.

The installation of red and yellow line markings alongside blue and red goal ends and two netball sockets allow for a wide selection of different sports to be played. Football, hockey, tennis, netball and cricket are just some of the sports that children have been trying their hand at every break and lunchtime.

A 2m high fence surrounds the pitch, including sports rebound mesh which ensures that time is never wasted retrieving equipment! There is a single gate onto the MUGA allowing easy access for all, directly from the playground.

The Installation of our Super Surfacing

The removal of the old rubber surfacing and installation of the MUGA was such a welcome change for Woodmancote. The area around the MUGA where the rubber surfacing was is now soil and has been re-seeded which will create a beautiful, natural space over time.

To ensure easy access to the pitch, in all weather, we installed a large section of our Artificial Grass Playturf directly in front of the playground. We also installed smaller sections of play turf in front of three classrooms to create bright, attractive spaces with a natural feel.

Our play turf is durable yet soft to the touch providing pupils with an extended play area that is safe and inviting. Sporting spectators have a brilliant spot to watch all the action!

Woodmancote School now have superb sporting facilities to engage all children in physical activity and extra-curricular clubs with specialised coaches. Pupils have been provided with amazing opportunities to excel in sports and to take part in competitions.

Headteacher, Gary Tucker commented “From conception to execution Pentagon have communicated effectively and plans have been easily adapted to suit our needs. Our MUGA is a fantastic addition to our school.”
