An Inclusive SEN Playground for St Margarets CE Primary School

The Customer

St Margaret’s School in West Sussex aims to create a positive and engaging learning environment for all of their pupils, no matter their age or ability level.

This is why St Margaret’s wanted to create an inclusive SEN playground for their pupils to enjoy and explore.

The Objectives

St Margaret’s, a returning customer, looking to create an active and inclusive play area contacted Pentagon Play to consult on their space.

They have a few wheelchair users in the school and want their play space to be an inclusive environment for all.

Our team explained that we could look at adapting our Play Towers or Active Play to meet their requirements as the team at St Margarets were looking at our Playframes.

A big priority was also surfacing underneath any climbing equipment, so FunTurf was which is a short pile which means that the children can navigate across with little friction was also recommended to the customer.

Outdoor Learning Consultant, Paul Speller, visited the site to meet with the team and learn more about their space.

Our Approach

Paul created a Bespoke Accessible Play Tower, including 2 Large Decks, a Vertical Climbing Wall, and Easy Access Stairs.

This exciting active play space offers an engaging space for pupils to build their gross motor skills and have their very own imaginative adventures.

Paul also added a Heavy Work Swing to the space, allowing pupils to build their muscle strength and focus on their proprioception.

Another addition to this space is this sheltered outdoor learning space in the form of a 6m Octagonal Gazebo, where pupils can continue their classroom learning outdoors in the fresh air. This change of environment is great for stimulating children’s attention spans and keeping them focused on a subject.

This is such an exciting and inclusive play area, and we’re sure the children at St Margaret’s love this new space!

The Results

The feedback we had from St Margaret’s was extremely positive and we’re excited to share this with you!

“My vision was for all-inclusive play equipment that our children who have physical disabilities could use confidently and with their peers. Paul was excellent at suggesting different ideas and the idea he suggested for the swing is so popular with all children. My vision has certainly been achieved and more besides!

The quality of the products, the installation team and the bespoke service from Paul means that I will not be using a different playground equipment provider again. Everything was first class. I would highly reconnect Pentagon Play.

We have to use timetable to rota classes at break time as it is so popular! The children love the double width slide as it encourages collaborative play, and the staff love it too!

We had excellent service from the first moment I met Paul.  Paul clearly understands children and his knowledge of the equipment was incredibly useful. He understood what we wanted, and his ideas and designs are very successful. The installation team were very efficient and the whole process was stress free.”
