Millom Infant School’s Playground Development

An Outstanding Playground Transformation That Benefits The Whole School

Our playground consultant, Tom Benson, was delighted to be given the opportunity to work alongside Milliom Infant School in Egmount, Cumbria to improve their outdoor play provision.

From a blank, tarmac canvas into a space that provides children with numerous playtime activities to participate in, improving physical skills, social skills and fostering long-lasting friendships, this stimulating development has benefited the whole school.

Inspiring Fun Active Play Games

One of the main aims of this playground development was to provide the pupils with an area where they could burn off some excess energy and get all of their muscles working… a trim trail was the perfect solution!

Millom’s trim trail is a mixed adventure challenge made up of nine different obstacles, covering balance, upper and lower body strength, fine and gross motor skills, core stability and coordination.

Installed in a U shape, emergency vehicle access to the playground has been maintained, and the children don’t have far to run back to the start of the trail!

Underneath the new challenge, we installed our soft Artificial Grass Surfacing with bespoke Saferturf writing underneath. This enables the children to tackle the trim trail all year round thanks to it’s free-draining nature, whilst absorbing the impact of slips, trips and falls.

A Space for Outdoor Lessons and Playtime Socialisation

Next on the agenda was an area where teachers could take their classes outside for fresh-air learning along with an area for children to shelter from the rain, eat lunch and sit down and socialise during playtimes.

A 5m Gazebo suited this criteria perfectly!

Featuring an artificial grass base, internal benches, a water tight roof and a giant chalkboard, the gazebo is a practical teaching space for teachers to deliver lessons outdoors come rain or shine.

Injecting Colour Onto the Tarmac

Following the perimeter of the school playground, we used Thermoplastic Playground Markings to provide the young athletes with a dedicated Daily Mile Track.

12 laps around the track equals mile and there are even several activities that can be completed at various stages to make this healthy, active experience more fun, such as hurdles, skipping and hopping! This is a fabulous way to improve children’s overall physical fitness.

Moreover, we also installed a Goal End with a bright blue Wetpour Surface and goal target to inject even more colour and sporting opportunities onto the tarmac area.

Penalty shoot outs, basketball practice or target practice are wonderful ways to improve sporting skills, coordination and increase teamwork.
