Welcome to the Walled Garden Play Space at The Amicus School

The Customer

Pentagon Play were delighted to partner with an inspirational school setting to build a tranquil walled garden space.

The Amicus school wanted to create a structured play area where pupils could relax, have fun and develop a range of key physical skills.

Their Objectives

The garden needed to include natural elements and materials to connect pupils to the world around them. We wanted to create different areas for all pupils, whether exploring sensory or imaginative play. Social interaction was a top priority, with a focus on children’s wellbeing and opportunity to make connections.

Our Approach

The central area of the space is now home to a range of physical pieces. Adventure awaits as pupils’ zigzag through their bespoke Trim Trail course. Disc Poles allow learners to pull themselves up, climb across the Crisscross Net Traverse and then use core stability to bravely step across the Horizontal Log Bridge.

Favourite items include the Wobbly Log Traverse which develops balance and coordination as children hang on tight! The Forest Monkey Bars with Step up Logs have seen pupils improving their fitness and strength as they learn to swing with ease.

The Impressive Tryfan Climber with Platform and Slide is a unique, triangular framed structure which allows children to explore climbing and ways of travelling at their own pace.

Made from high quality timber beams this active hub promotes effective communication whilst fostering friendship and teamwork. Pupils enjoy using the slide, climbing walls and den to create imaginary games.

All weather Artificial Grass Playturf has been installed underneath the active pieces with an additional foam shockpad layer for added safety. Our fantastic Playturf is free-draining, durable, attractive and also comes with a 10-year guarantee.

A striking Sensory Arbour allows natural sunlight to reflect colour throughout the space with musical chimes providing a calming atmosphere for pupils to release creativity.

Trellis screens add to the cosy, enclosed feeling of the garden and can even be used for weaving or hanging items pupils make. Learners have already started growing colourful, scented flowers in their Corner Planter Bench creating a lovely conversation spot to share experiences and express feelings.

Two paired breakout spaces near the back wall include a Wigwam and a Giant Playhouse with Walls, Chalkboard and Benches.

Our engaging Wigwams offer a shady den ideal for reading or socialising. Often the focal point for games pupils can fully immerse themselves in role-play activities. A Giant Playhouse is big enough for groups of children to play, sing and act whilst building relationships. A Playhouse can be transformed into any space imaginable and the chalkboard and den making holes certainly help to create different places and scenes.

Wetpour Surfacing in earthy tones compliments the natural feel of the space beautifully whilst creating a safe environment that can withstand heavy usage.

The Results

The walled garden playspace compliments the rural location of the setting, providing the ideal place for learning and exploring. The range of pieces selected allowed us to design a space to suit all ages, enabling children to grow and develop.

Pupils are free to express their creativity and the garden is a welcome addition to the school in supporting pupils with their emotional well-being.
